A variant of the SPU Classic GM mkII equipped with a Nude elliptical stylus designed by Ortofon, the SPU Classic GM E mkII is a moving-coil pickup capsule featuring the characteristic SPU design that provides access to the special sonic magic of this very old transducer concept at a moderate price. It should be said that when the SPU was first introduced in 1958, it offered a superior type of sound to any other pickup capsule on the market for the simple reason that its design was far superior to that of its competitors. Even today, more than half a century later, the SPU still exhibits a sound that definitely has its own personality and continues to enjoy a strong following among audio purists who have a special appreciation for vintage components.
From a technical point of view, the SPU Classic E mkII is based on an evolved version of the two key innovations of the SPU at the time: a signal generator system consisting of two low-impedance coils and the use of extremely thin copper conductors in the windings of these coils, plus the arrangement of the coils so that the two walls of a stereo record's micro-surround generate two discrete signals with maximum channel separation. As a result, the SPU Classic GM E mkII delivers what was once known as the " Ortofon sound", characterised by rich bass and transparent treble, plus a number of qualities that are difficult to define but easy to appreciate once perceived. A genuine classic in audio history.
