Version of the SPU Classic N with elliptical stylus.
The SPU Classic N E can be defined as the version of the SPU Classic GM mkII without the characteristic integrated SPU cartridge holder, which allows it to be used with all types of reading arms. The SPU was introduced to the market in 1958 in response to the demand for capsules to play the new stereo vinyl records. The acronym SPU stands for "Stereo Pick-Up" or "pick-up capsule", because until then (i.e. during the 1950s and 1960s) the capsules available on the market were simply called "capsules". Also fundamental to the SPU is the role played in its development by Robert Gudmandsen, one of the most brilliant engineers at Ortofon.
Based on 10-year-old technology and Ortofon 's experience in monophonic cartridge design, the SPU immediately defined the quality standard for pick-up cartridges for professional and audiophile applications, and set the standard for product design in its class for the next 57 years. Supplied as standard with an SPU N adapter, the SPU Classic N E is a moving coil capsule mounting an 18 um radius elliptical profile diamond stylus, which in conjunction with Ortofon 's unique SPU signal generation concept allows all types of vinyl recordings to be reproduced with a fresh, vital and spacious sound (thanks to excellent channel spacing).
