Featuring a body combining ABS (a very resistant synthetic material) and aluminium, the MC Quintet Black S is in a way the result of a strategic decision by Ortofon related to the increasing difficulty in obtaining boron and therefore the need to find an alternative but more affordable material. In the case of the MC Quintet Black S, the solution chosen to offer top-level performance while keeping the price factor under control is the use of sapphire for the cantilever, which in conjunction with one of the legendary Shibata diamond tips and voice coils with Aucurum windings (a Ortofon classic consisting of gold-plated 6N copper conductors), makes it possible to produce a detailed and highly pure sound across the entire audio frequency range, while creating a perfectly structured soundstage.
The engineers at Ortofon particularly emphasise the excellent ability of the sapphire to transfer mechanical impulses from the stylus to the coil system, thus contributing to a particularly agile and incisive sound character. It should also be noted that the output level of the MC Quintet Black S requires a high-gain phono preamp or a dedicated step-up transformer (e.g. from Ortofon itself) for optimum performance.
