Equipped with a body that combines ABS (a very resistant synthetic material) and aluminum, the MC Quintet Black S is in a way the result of a strategic decision by Ortofon related to the increasing difficulty in obtaining boron and therefore the need to find an alternative but more affordable material. In the case of the MC Quintet Black S, the solution chosen to offer top-level performance while keeping the price factor under control is using sapphire for the cantilever, which in conjunction with one of the legendary Shibata diamond tips and moving coils with Aucurum windings (an Ortofon classic consisting of gold-plated 6N copper conductors), allow the production of a detailed and highly pure sound throughout the entire range of audio frequencies, while creating a perfectly structured sound scene.
Ortofon engineers particularly highlight the excellent ability of sapphire to transfer mechanical impulses from the needle to the coil system, thus contributing to achieving a sound with a particularly agile and incisive character. Of the MC Quintet Black S, it should also be noted that its output level requires a high-gain phono preamplifier or a dedicated step-up transformer (from Ortofon itself, for example) to obtain optimal performance.
